Chico Public Works crews hustled Wednesday to clear the nearly 300 miles of storm drains on city streets before the upcoming storm. "Leaves and debris in the streets can certainly plug up storm drain lines and cause localized flooding," said Skyler Lipski, Manager of Public Works. Storm aftermath the city is trying to avoid before the expected high winds and heavy rain hits Chico Thursday. "It's the best way to keep the storm drain lines clear is to keep all that debris ahead of time," said Lipski. City crews are responsible for more than 40,000 trees and manage 240 miles of storm drain lines. "It's a big task, but we've been preparing for this year round," said Lipski. Leaf clean ups have been more frequent in Chico neighborhoods to keep up with the wetter weather occurring this Fall. "We have been more vigilant with our storm drain cleaning and storm drain line cleaning," said Lipski. Lipski also says crews were monitoring the weather as the storm rolled in. "The expectation for high winds, wind gusts of 20-30mph has us a little concerned. We encourage folks to be aware of where they are parking and be aware of where they are driving," said Lipski. PG&E has also geared up for the storm by increasing staff for the expected high winds. "They can topple over trees and fall onto power lines causing an outage so if we have heavier winds like we are expecting with this storm there will be outages and we will be ready for them," said Paul Moreno, PG&E Spokesperson. Moreno advises residents to prepare for the potential outages. "If you do have a power outage, don't use candles because of the fire danger. We recommend battery operated lanterns or flash lights, make sure you have fresh batteries available. Make sure you keep your refrigerator closed it will stay cold for hours," said Moreno. Crews will be out cleaning up leaves again on Thursday. If you do experience flooding from a clogged storm drain you should call the Public Works Department at 530- 894-4200 during business hours or Chico Police dispatch if it's after five in the evening at 530-897-4911. The city is not providing sand bags to residents, but officials do recommend you to buy them to prepare for potential flooding.
